Reigning Is Receiving

There is a word in Romans 5:17 that quietly settles the whole Christian life, and most believers read straight past it. The verse does not say those who work will reign. It does not say those who deserve will reign. It says those who receive will reign.

Paul is drawing a contrast between two men and two kingdoms. Through Adam, death reigned over humanity — sickness, fear, shame and defeat became the atmosphere everyone breathed. Nobody had to work at being under it. It simply came with the territory. Then Paul says something startling: how much more. The reign of life through Jesus is not equal to the reign of death; it is greater. Grace outweighs sin. Life outweighs death. The second Adam did more than undo the damage of the first.

Two things to receive

Notice precisely what Paul says we receive. First, the abundant provision of grace. Not a measured ration of grace, carefully dispensed according to your performance last week — abundance. Second, the gift of righteousness. Righteousness is not described here as a standard you climb toward but as a gift placed into your hands.

This is why so many sincere Christians are exhausted. They are trying to reign in life while still trying to earn the two things that make reigning possible. It is like a man trying to run a marathon while still negotiating for the shoes he is already wearing.

You do not reign in life because you have been strong. You reign in life because you have received.

What reigning actually looks like

To reign in life does not mean you never face difficulty. It means difficulty no longer has the last word. It means fear no longer sets your agenda, shame no longer defines your identity, and circumstances no longer dictate your future. You are no longer under it. You are over it, in Christ.

Think of a king in his own territory. He does not beg for what is already his. He does not lobby for permission to be king. He simply acts from a position that has already been granted him. Ephesians 2:6 says God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms. Seated is the posture of finished work, and it is also the posture of authority.

So how do you receive? The same way you received salvation — by faith, not by feeling. You take God at His word before your circumstances agree with Him. You say what He says about you. You thank Him for what He has already given rather than begging Him for what He has already provided.

Today, before you ask God for anything, take a few minutes to receive. Receive grace like a thirsty person receives water. Receive righteousness like a gift you did not deserve — because you did not. And then step into your day, not as a beggar hoping for a break, but as one who reigns in life through Jesus Christ.
