The Finished Work

A Better Covenant

Tuesday, 28 July 2026 · 4 min read · Pastor Ian

But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
Hebrews 8:6NIV

The Old Covenant depended on human performance, so it failed. The New Covenant depends on the performance of Jesus, so it cannot fail. That is what makes it better — not newer, better.

God promised through Jeremiah, “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts… For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” God has chosen to remember your sins no more — not because sin does not matter, but because it has already been dealt with in the body of Jesus.

You were not a negotiating party in this covenant. You were the beneficiary.

When you take communion you are not begging for a blessing. You are remembering a covenant that already stands in your favour, signed in blood that will never lose its power.

Confession

I am in covenant with God through the blood of Jesus. My sins are remembered no more and God's Word is written on my heart.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the New Covenant established in the blood of Jesus. Thank you that my forgiveness is complete and my access to you is secure. Write your Word deeply on my heart and let me live today with covenant confidence, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
