The Gift You Did Not Earn

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Righteousness is not a reward for good behaviour; it is a gift given to those who could never earn it. Romans 5:17 calls it “the gift of righteousness.” A gift cannot be worked for, only received.
This is the great exchange. Jesus took what was ours — our sin, our shame, our judgement — so that we could receive what was His: His righteousness, His standing, His favour with the Father. There is no negotiation left, no probation period, no sliding scale based on how your week went.
It changes how you pray
A believer unsure of their righteousness approaches God apologetically, hoping to be tolerated. A believer who knows they have been made righteous comes to the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16) — not because of their performance, but because of Christ's.
Right living flows out of right believing. Reverse the order and you get religion.
You are not trying to become righteous. In Christ you already are. Live consciously righteous today and watch how naturally your conduct begins to agree with your identity.
Confession
I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. My righteousness is a gift, not a wage. I come boldly to God today.
Prayer
Father, thank you that righteousness is your gift to me and not the reward of my effort. I receive it by faith. I refuse condemnation and shame, and I approach you boldly today. Teach me to live from the righteousness you have given me, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
