Ask ten people in Bloemfontein what "church" is and most will describe a building, a Sunday service, and a pastor at the front. That's part of the picture — but a cell church tells a fuller story. It's a church where the primary place life, faith and discipleship happen isn't a stage on Sunday, but a living room during the week.
The simple definition
A cell church is a local church built around small groups — called cells — that meet weekly in homes for worship, Bible discussion, prayer, and real friendship. The whole church still gathers large on Sundays to celebrate, but the cells are where people are actually known, discipled, prayed for and sent.
The image the New Testament gives us is exactly this rhythm: the early church "met in the temple courts" and "broke bread in their homes" (Acts 2:46). Large gatherings and small tables. Not one or the other.
Cell church vs. traditional church
Most traditional models centre almost everything on the Sunday service, with mid-week programmes as optional extras. A cell church flips the emphasis:
- Gather large on Sunday to worship, hear the Word, and celebrate what God is doing.
- Grow small in the week to open the Bible together, pray for one another, and live the faith in ordinary life.
The result is a church where discipleship isn't a class you sign up for — it's the friendships you're already in.
Why cells matter in Bloemfontein

What actually happens in a cell group?
- Welcome — coffee, food, catching up. Real friendship, not a formal meeting.
- Worship — a few songs, quietly, in a lounge. Simple, honest.
- Word — a short Bible discussion linked to Sunday's message or a book of the Bible.
- Witness — praying for friends, family and the city; asking who God is drawing.
Groups are usually 6–12 people, meet weekly for about 90 minutes, and multiply as they grow so no one gets lost in a crowd.
